Artist Statement

As a little girl, I used to curl my hand into a small hole and look at everything through this impromptu spyglass. I made groupings of color, texture and light, framing the world in little vignettes. Forty-five years later, the camera has allowed me to revisit and reinterpret this fascination of looking at the world through a lens.

I have been fortunate to have a bird’s eye view, perched high above Salt Lake City, with unobstructed views looking east, west, north and south. From this vantage point, I have been a witness to the dynamic interplay between light, clouds, mountains and our impact on the land. I am frequently moved by the realization that I am surrounded by giants that take my breath away.

I find myself attracted to the buildings and equipment of the urban landscape, some of which may be considered blight when taken on their own. However, it is the juxtaposition of man-made objects and nature that I find most compelling.

With my urban photographs, I wish to convey the beauty and interest I see that is so frequently overlooked in our busy lives.
